Are your Pantone books up to date?

There are several compelling reasons to updating your Pantone book. Firstly, it allows you to stay up-to-date with the latest colours and trends, ensuring that your designs are on point. Additionally, replacing outdated books affected by handling, light, and dirt ensures accuracy in your colour choices. Moreover, having everyone in the workflow equipped with the latest version saves time, confusion and minimises the need for rework.

If your Pantone books are more than 12 months old you could be missing colours which are vital to ensure your designs are fresh. Pantone have produced two handy graphics to assist customers in identifying the age of their books -and how many colours they are missing!

One graphic shows the Pantone PMS Graphics books and the other shows the Pantone Fashion, Home + Interior books.

Perhaps you have been using the paper TPG fans but your suppliers have TCX or vice versa? This can cause issues with colour matching so ideally everyone in a supply chain should use the same type.

The paper TPG books are aimed at matching footwear and accessories, packaging or hard home goods rather than fabric and if you use TPX the books are over 8 years old!

The TPG pale and medium colours match the TCX colours under D65 Daylight lighting, however the dark or saturated (bright) colours are not such a good colour match. It is impossible to build up the colour on the paper to the same depth of shade as on the cotton fabric.

Also the chemistry of applying ink to paper and dye to fabric is different and can cause metamerism issues. This means that the colours so they will not necessarily match under a different light source such as store light.

If you rely on colour selection in TPG format but request colour matching to the TCX SMART swatch standards you should purchase a swatch to check you are happy with the TCX version before specifying.

Budget Options

If your budget does not stretch to the most updated version but your book is faded or dirty then help is at hand!

Bargains can be found if you buy one of the older versions (brand new, unopened) and bundle with a supplement. Get all the colours for a fraction of the price! Older versions were printed in the second half of 2022.
