Coming Soon! Pantone Color of the Year 2025
Save the Date! Thursday December 5th 2024 is when we expect the announcement on the Pantone Color of the Year for 2025.
One of my favourite activities at this time of year is to try to predict which colour will be chosen for the Pantone Colour of the Year. I quite often select the correct hue even if Pantone pick a slightly different tone.
Pantone were the first of the colour companies to create a colour of the year. It was originally created by the Pantone Color Institute in 1999, with the aim of educating the design community in the relationship between culture and colour. The first Color of the Year was announced for 2000 and was Cerulean Blue 15-4020 TCX
Each year global colour experts from the Pantone Color Institute embrace culture from all over the world. They consider many colour influences from art, dance, sport and film, gaming and technology to social media and street fashion. The colour influences inform the trend reports, influence the design community and come through to actual products. A consensus is eventually reached on the predominant colour for the following year.
So, what will be the Colour of the Year for 2025?
The recent Pantone trend forecasts for Spring/Summer 2025 at both the London and New York fashion Weeks, provide insight into which colour will be chosen. Often there will be one or two colours which appear in both reports. This time, the only colour which appears in both the London and New York Colour Palettes is White Grape 14-0442 TCX. White Grape is a zingy green shade reminiscent of the first leaves of Spring. Could this be the colour of the year?
Or maybe another on trend colour will be chosen?
Perhaps a yellow such as Yellow Jasper 12-0719 TCX one of the new colours from the Pantone dualities colour collection?
Below I reviewed some possible Pantone Fashion, Home + Interior colours from the current and Spring 2025 trends and predict what the Pantone Color of the Year 2025 will be!
Green
Continuing the themes of nature and sustainability, green is still a shade used in many fashion colour palettes.
The Pantone trend colours used in New York were described by Pantone as “A harmonious grouping of color inspired by the precious natural world”.
Pantone featured Viridian Green 17-5126 TCX in the London Fashion Trend Report. Viridian Green is a vibrant teal used by Jil Sander and Elie Saab on the Fall 24 catwalk as well as by brands such as Diesel.
Whereas Garden Green 19-0230 TCX and Kashmir 17-6319 TCX from the New York Fashion Trend Report are much less saturated and darker.
I think the colour of the year is more likely to be a fresher, brighter tone such as White Grape 14-0442 TCX which was seen at the Gucci and Issey Miyake Spring 24 catwalk shows. Or it could be a paler green – Meadow Mist 12-0106 TCX is ideal to replace white or cream as your neutral for Spring 25.
Blue
There is a strong case for the colour of the year to be a blue or blue/green shade.
Maybe this year will be the turn of Airy Blue 14-4122 TCX, which we predicted for last year? It certainly appeared in the in the London Fashion Trend Report, will it be selected this time?. Airy Blue is a bright sky blue – think cloudless sky in late Spring.
Possibly the colour of the year will be a more watery tone like Limpet Shell 13-4810 TCX from the New York Fashion Trend Report. Déjà vu Blue 19-4041 TCX would also be a popular choice continuing the spotlight on strong dark blues. This was also a New York Fashion Trend Report colour.
Rich dark blues are a strong, sophisticated colour trend for interior design as well as in fashion. Eclipse 19-3810 TCX and Blue Granite 18-3933 TCX which feature in the New York Fashion Trend Report as seasonless shades are both possible colours of the year and would be the ideal choice for a colour which needs to work all year.
Many high street stores have blue in their collections with an almost equal balance between steel blues and brighter electric blues in coats, knitwear, trousers and lingerie.
Perhaps Deja Vu Blue 19-4041 will be the Color of the Year 2025? There hasn’t been a bright blue selected since 2008 when Blue Iris 18-3943 was chosen so maybe this year will be a bright blue year?
Red
Vibrant reds were prominent in the 2023 collections, however this year red became richer and darker. Earlier this year Sabato De Sarno introduced a new colour to Gucci, named “Gucci Rosso Ancora”. Other designers also experimented with tones of burgundy and maroon.
Pantone identified Windsor Wine 19-1528 TCX as a key colour seen at the spring/summer 2025 London Fashion Week shows. “‘Windsor Wine’ evokes the luxury of bygone eras with its full-bodied maroon red that is earthy and warm, and this red, which often feels like ‘elegance personified,’ falls within the same family as the Gucci Rosso hue,” Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, told Vogue.
As Pantone chose Viva Magenta 18-1750 TCX as the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year, I think it is unlikely that a red will be chosen again so soon, but you never know!
Brown
One of the biggest fashion colour trends for 2025 is chocolate brown. Warming and cosy it is typically seen in Autumn collections but as a versatile neutral it can also be carried through to Spring. Ideal as an alternative to black or grey, brown compliments other colours and can be used as a single shade.
Chocolate appeared in many of the Autumn/Winter 2024 runway collections with shades ranging from Bitter Chocolate to Cocoa. Miu Miu showcased leather pea coats with coordinating gloves and bags, and at Bottega Veneta models were dressed head to toe in the same hue in maxi dresses accessorised with boots and oversized coats.
On the high street French Connection feature chocolate ganache satin shirts and trousers as well as knitwear and blazers. Mango have camel coats and chocolate skirts.
Could the Pantone Color of the Year be Rum Raisin 19-1321 TCX from the the New York Fashion Trend Report or Cocoa 19-1119 TCX from the London Fashion Trend Report? Or perhaps Bitter Chocolate 19-1317 TCX or Chocolate Fondant 19-1432?
What do you think Pantone Color of the Year 2025 might be?
Maybe Pantone will surprise us again and will pick a different shade entirely. Don’t forget that for 2022 Pantone invented a completely new colour Very Peri 17-3938 to be their Color of the Year!
