At this time of year I start to wonder which colour will be chosen for the Pantone Color of the Year. Usually, the announcement is made on the 1^st Thursday in December, which is 7th December this year.

Pantone were the first of the colour companies to create a colour of the year. It was originally created by the Pantone Color Institute in 1999, with the aim of educating the design community in the relationship between culture and colour. The first Color of the Year was announced for 2000 and was Cerulean Blue 15-4020 TCX

Each year global colour experts from the Pantone Color Institute embrace culture from all over the world. They consider many colour influences from art, dance, sport and film, gaming and technology to social media and street fashion. The colour influences are used in their work, discussed, and refined and eventually a consensus is reached on the standout shade for the following year.

Why announce a Color of the Year?

The goal of the Pantone COY is to help both brands and consumers understand the power that colour can have.

Following in Pantone’s lead some paint brands and other colour standard companies also have a colour of the year. Dulux was one of the first to follow and have for the past 20 years translated trends in interior decoration into a Colour of the Year.

At one time there was little cross over between the colours for apparel and colours for home and interiors, but now similar hues appear in both. People enjoy calming neutral interiors but are not afraid to inject pops of bright colour to add interest. It is the same with clothing, we are not afraid to be bold and use colour to make a statement.

“Colours for LFW Spring /Summer 2024 underscore our desire for profound and meaningful self-expression,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute.

So, what will be the Color of the Year for 2024?

The recent trend forecasts released for Spring/Summer 2024 at both the London and New York fashion Weeks, usually give us a good idea of what the COTY might be. Often there will be one or two colours which appear in both reports. This time, there are no overlapping colours between the London and New York Colour Palettes – Pantone are keeping us guessing! However, there are similarities in the shades on both palettes with an emphasis on dynamic bright shades.

With this in mind, let’s look at some of the Pantone Fashion, Home + Interior colours and predict what the Pantone Color of the Year 2024 will be!

Red

Vibrant Fiesta 17-1564 is a prominent shade in the London Fashion Colour Trend Report and many designers showed collections in shades of red including Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen and Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino. Other designers such as Sabato De Sarno with his first Gucci collection used a deeper cherry red perhaps inspired by the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year Viva Magenta 18-1750 TCX.

As Pantone chose a red last year, we think it is unlikely that a red will be chosen as the Color of the Year 2024 but you never know!

 

 

Green

Continuing the themes of nature and sustainability, green is still a shade used in many fashion colour palettes.

From zesty limes and neon greens to darker more forest tones. In the  London Fashion Colour Trend Report Bistro Green 19-5408 was described as a hearty deep green tone, whereas in the New York Fashion Report Mint 16-5938 was a much more bold shade!

Blue

Bold bright blue was a feature of the Autumn 2023 fashion show by Daniel Lee at Burberry and the colour seems to be continuing in popularity into Spring. Many high street stores are also adding items in electric blue from winter coats to dresses and knitwear which will be wearable through the spring season.

Perhaps Strong Blue 18-4051 will be the Color of the Year 2024?

There has not been a blue shade chosen since 2020 when Classic Blue 19-4052 was Color of the Year, however, this was a much calmer shade of blue chosen to bring calmness, protection and stability.

Sky Blue was also featured heavily on the Spring catwalks in both clothing and accessories. Perhaps Pantone will choose Horizon Blue 16-4427 “an atmospheric blue hue denoting where the sea meets the sky” or Capri 15-4722 “a bright blue hue reminiscent of the azure coloured waters of the blue grotto”?. Or maybe a lighter tone will be chosen – nearer to Cerulean which was chosen as Color of the Year 200o? If so then maybe Airy Blue 14-4122, which we predicted for last year will be selected this time?.

The blues predicted to be used in 2024 are bright regardless of whether they are light shades of sky blue such as Airy Blue 14-4122 and Skylight 12-4604 or more saturated ones like Electric Blue Lemonade 18-4245 TN or Bluing 19-3954 . There hasn’t been a bright blue selected since 2008 when Blue Iris 18-3943 was chosen so maybe this year will be a bright blue year?

White

Another feature of both the Spring catwalks and the Pantone Color Trend Reports was White. WWD even proclaimed it in a headline article “The Biggest Color Trend for Spring 2024 Was a Non-Color”. Monochromatic white was used by Gabriela Hearst at Chloe as well as by Saint Laurent.

Even though white is regularly a feature of Summer clothing this would be a controversial choice as Color of the Year! Although Pantone have chosen colours from the Classics sector of their reports before and they are not afraid of being controversial. So could it be Brilliant White 11-4001 which they describe as clean, crisp, and pristine and suggestive of simplicity and modernity?

 

 

 

 

Yellows and Oranges

As we predicted last year yellow and orange has continued in popularity with shades ranging from neon yellow to mustard and coral to fruity orange. Radiant yellows immediately bring thoughts of warm sunshine and sunflowers whereas fiery oranges are reminiscent of the sunset.

Could this year be the year for yellow or orange?

On the high street yellow and orange is still prevalent in knitwear and Pantone have included zesty Lemon Drop 12-0736 and exotic Spicy Mustard 14-0952 in the Fashion Color Reports. Could it be one of these? Or will it be Sun Orange 16-1257 or tangy Orangeade 17-1471 instead?

On the catwalk luxurious metallic golds were featured in Ralph Lauren, Roksanda and Alberta Ferretti’s collections. Could Pantone select a metallic this year? If so will it be Rich Gold 16-0836?
